Our Life in Six Lyrical Poems
Discussions Series with Poets about Poetry
The course will be taught by Michael Braziller, the Publisher of Persea Books, an independent literary press he co-founded in 1975, and which is devoted almost exclusively to educational and poetry titles. One eminent poet will be invited to assist in teaching each class. Mr. Braziller and his guest will look closely at some of the greatest and most memorable poems of our time, such as Thomas Hardy's "Poems of 1912-13," and William Butler Yeats' "The Tower." Historical, political, artistic and biographical influences will be discussed. But the principal emphasis will be on the emotional and psychological life of the poems themselves, and the ways in which they deal with love, joy, grief, aging, the role of politics, and the fear of change in our lives. In addition, the visiting poet will read and discuss one poem of his or her own which is, in some way, influenced by the poem under discussion. No prior registration or fee is required.
