Hive/Web/Mind: Animal Nests & Human Networks
Art Exhibition
Works by Christy Ellis, Suzanne Kelser, Caitlin Masley, John Powers, Bridget Starr Taylor, Susan Wides
at the Center
What is the impulse that compels animals and people to organize themselves, physically and psychically, in relationship with each other? From beehives to spider webs, from ants to birds, creatures create networks that establish intricate symbioses and hierarchies, both within species and between species, often resulting in fascinating physical patterns. Humans also organize themselves into hives, through architecture and city planning, at the same time creating modes of conceptual interconnectedness. The Internet has emerged as a medium for creating ever-more specialized conceptual hives. The exhibition Hive/Web/Mind: Animal Nests and Human Networks, held in conjunction with the roundtable, The Allure of the Hive: Social Networking and Social Change, explores artistic renderings of physical nests, burrows, and buildings, along with renderings of an imagined hive mind.
The exhibition may be viewed by appointment M-F from 11:00AM to 5:00PM. Please call 646-422-0544 or email info@philoctetes.org to make arrangements.
