With or Without Permission: Appropriation, Assemblage, and Collage

Artists often create work that incorporates life experience and personal narrative. If they don't use their own history, they may appropriate someone else's. They layer, assemble, reconfigure, reveal and embalm histories, cultural iconography, and objects in skillfully crafted and inventive ways. Are the photographs, reproductions, books, maps, and memorabilia captured by these artists similar to the burial practices of the ancient Egyptians? Who are the rightful owners of their creations? The exhibition With or Without Permission: Appropriation, Assemblage, and Collage serves as a visual counterpart to the roundtable The Lure and Blur of the Real and a screening of Joseph Cornell's film Flushing Meadows. It explores the art of collecting, sorting, and arranging the ephemera and detritus of life to connect the imaginative and the real.
